Music career motorways – Start with the destination

Think of your music career as a journey (this sounds deep but go with me on this). Most musicians learn to play guitar and then start on their path to their musical destiny without any idea of where they are headed.

If you were planning a car journey (using London as a starting point) after choosing the destination, there would be a route that would take you there. If it were Manchester you would take the M6, Swansea would be the M4, Cambridge the M11.

Musicians have a tendency of picking their route before they chose their desired finishing point. The world is littered with musicians that want to be a “session musician” without even knowing the full extend of what that even means. How do you find paid work as a musician? How do you promote yourself as a musician? How much should you charge per hour as a musician?

If you want to be a session guitarist but are in an original metal band, then this is the geographical equivalent of wanting to drive on the M1 so you can get to Southampton. It’s not the most efficient route. You’re driving the wrong way!

Decide where you want your career to be and then find the right road to travel. Take advice, research and make sure every decision you make is aiming towards your music career destination.
