Musicians & Pension, 2 words that go together like ‘Mum and Rohypnol!’ But hear me out because no money needs change hands and you will need a plan at some point in the future, so let’s start thinking about it now and make a plan together… or at least hear me out…. or I will come around and rohypnol your mum!

I’m not talking about a real grown up pension plan…. A pension is just a vehicle for ensuring you having money coming in (in some form or another) when you can’t or don’t want to gig anymore. Don’t forget your body might give out before you’re ready, or worse still, bands might not want to gig with you when you look older than Chad Kroeger!

For me this is about playing the long term game. It’s about being clever with what you are doing today to invest in your future as a musician so you have more options as the years role on. Practicing & learning, building contacts, learning the industry and why it works, building your brand (which is the wanky saying for building trust in your name), and developing more strings to your musical bow can all be added to the pension pot to take out at a later date.

The question is : What are you doing now that will benefit you in 20-30 years? Are you practicing every day? Being an amazing musician is an amazing pension and there are not many great musicians out there compared to how many musicians making a living.

It’s 2016 and social media isn’t a thing anymore.. its THE thing. Documenting your playing, your journey and engaging people is the best plan to getting more work in the long term. Its the shop window for people to see you, hear about you and get in touch. The amount of musicians who don’t have a social media footprint other than a personal Facebook is baffling. IT’s FREE!!!!

Build your content and build your pension, let the world see who you are and what you do and think long term over the next 20 years drip feeding this content into social media like youtube, instagram and snapchat and when you get a nice big pay off like a big tour or studio gig then document it and build that pension pot. Let it grow and then when it’s big enough you can start trading that pension in for studio work, bigger tours and high end teaching work.

Long term, drip feed, build your content pension!
