Gear obsessed or career obsessed?

All too often I see musicians with more gear than Kerry Katona on a Saturday night out! And it annoys me how much emphasis musicians put on their musical equipment before their career!

‘I’d rather see a musician gigging 3 times a week with a squire, than a bedroom player with a custom shop Fender!’

The right guitar does give off a good impression but only if you can play well and back it up otherwise it makes a worse impression as you try and over compensate for lack of ability and experience. I have several basses but one of them is a bastardised squire Jazz I bought second hand for 120 quid and I use it all the time on gigs as it sounds great.

Building your brand with professional shots, videos or studio days costs money but musicians would prefer to spend the money on an expensive instrument rather than their career! It baffles me! Spending a grand on marketing yourself now could be the difference between 10-20k a year FOREVER!

Several times a week I hold convos with musicians who can’t drive and can’t afford to learn but then pull out a pedal board bigger than Kim Kardashians fuckin massive arse! Learning to drive will cost money but how are you going to lug your FX around when your pedal train is bigger than the actual train?

Stop for a minute, think about your priorities! You can only play one guitar at a time, so prioritise your career over your gear snobbery and sell off some of the family jewels to stick into something that matters! You and your career!

Once you have all the marketing and personal improvements you need and the gigs are flowing in, then why not treat yourself but only when the time is right.

Career first, gear second!
