The Relationship Between a Covers Band And an Agency

As a commercial covers band you are only as good as the agency you work with, notice I say “work with”. An entertainment agency looks after the bookings for your covers band and ensures you have enough of the right type of gigs. They advertise your band and liaise with potential clients or brides looking for a covers band, leaving you to work on the most important stuff like the music, musicians, logistics, gear etc.

It’s the perfect match where musicians/bands can concentrate on the creative and geeky side while the agents cover the office based aspects like contracts, times, and the toughest part of the whole process, showcasing your covers band to prospective clients and bringing in the gigs. Make no mistake this is harder than every aspect of playing any gig you will ever do.

So how important is this relationship? After all the musicians are the ones actually performing, playing the music, owning the gear, liaising with the bride leading up to the gig, learning the first dance, travelling across the country and back again, not getting in until 3-4am. You have spent years mastering your instrument and £1000’s building the band… so where does this agent fit in?

In my opinion the agent is 100% THE most important aspect of any covers band set up. You and your agent are a team who should work together on how you can deliver the perfect nights entertainment. The agency will have your back if you have a problem and you will fight to promote the agency so they can get you more gigs.

When I started The Indie Killers what would I have given to cement this relationship? A bribe like flowers or chocolates? A showcase gig? a couple of gigs at discount rate? Nope, I would have given a years worth of free gigs if that had been needed. Now 8 years in we will still do whatever gig, for whatever fee they need us to do. That is the importance of an agency.

We are very lucky to work with such an amazing agency as Warble but I would like to think the feeling is mutual. We’re here together to make the experience for every bride & groom, for every corporate client and for every surprise birthday party beyond any expectation from the first enquiry until the amps are turned off at the end of the party!

And if you think this is some kind of sycophantic love-in for the girls and boys at Warble Entertainment.. IT IS! Of course it is, and you should be doing the same. When you are on a desert island and you find a source of water, you do whatever it takes to protect it. So don’t put all that hard work in and then fall at the last hurdle. Look after the people who can look after you.
