Preparing For The Punches

Being a boxer is about skill, strength and speed. 3 assets you can spend every day working on, but at the end of the day, no matter how much you try and avoid it, you are going to get punched squarely in the face! If you can’t get punched 500 times a night in the face and shake it off you can’t be a professional boxer.

As musicians, our careers will take many ups and downs and we will all take our fair share of knock backs and punches. Sometimes you will be riding the wave and every phone call is another gig while other times you’re worrying how to pay the phone bill, even though it’s not ringing at all (like what I did there?).

I got an email this morning from an old friend who taught at BIMM with me for years, and as a musician has played some of the biggest venues in the world. He is looking for any work he can get and is prepared to work for free to try and build his way back up.

Every day you will get some kind of punch in the face. Most musicians take to Facebook to cry and bitch about it. Don’t be that guy! Just shake it off, and move on. Over your career it’s about how well you have taken the punches and carried on. As long as you know that those punches are coming and you can only avoid so many it will help you prepare for what’s on its way.

Over time you can look around and see a lot of other musicians that have fallen along the way after being punched a few too many times. Are you prepared to be one of them?
